The year of science 2010 - “The future of energy”

Dramatic climate change, limited resources, and a drastic demand for energy provide will be the greatest challenge of coming years for mankind: how do we produce electricity and heat safely, economical and environmentally friendly? The science of the year 2010 is devoted to the issue with the theme “The Future of Energy”. The focus is on the new approaches of energy research worldwide and especially on the work of German scientists in this area – across the various disciplines.

Beginning with the year of science 2010 “the future of energy”, the science years revisit in future interdisciplinary topics. Only when a number of different scientists work together sustainable solutions can be developed for the future.

In year of science 2010 “the future of energy” should especially inspire young people for energy research. The curiosity of the young generation is the pioneer for innovations of tomorrow. Therefore, researchers provide insights into their work: whether hybrid engines, bio-fuels or fusion – the scientists show visitors their laboratories and facilities and make them experience the latest ways and technologies vividly. A variety of events, workshops and competitions give the future researchers the opportunity to discover new things and to be inspired.

◆ More energy for ideas – competition for students

How do the energy mixes of tomorrow look like? How will we deal with our energy resources? Who is responsible for the energy of the future?  

Students of all specializations and scientific disciplines are in the year of science 2010 “the future of energy” called to investigate these issues in competition for students.  

With the motto "Energy for Ideas" the Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) seeks creative and unusual projects, which bring a broad public, especially children and young people the many possibilities and aspects of energy research closer. The 15 best ideas will be awarded and will receive 10,000 Euros for the realization of their concepts.
